What to Expect at Your First Fitness Photoshoot

A complete walkthrough of the studio experience, from booking to getting your images. No surprises, no awkwardness.

Take the 60-Second QuizBook Your Session

Before the Shoot

Everything that happens between deciding to book and walking through the studio door.

Booking

Booking is simple. Choose a package, pick a date from the online calendar, and you're in. No deposit. No payment at this stage. Just a confirmed slot.

You'll receive a booking confirmation straight away with the studio address, directions, and free on-site parking details. If you have any questions before the day, you can message Christopher directly. He replies to everything personally.

The Prep Guide

As soon as you book, you'll receive a free Photoshoot Prep Guide. This covers everything you need to know before the day:

  • Nutrition timing - what to eat and when, so you look and feel your best
  • Outfit choices - what to bring, what works on camera, what to avoid
  • Skin preparation - tanning, grooming, and presentation tips
  • What to expect on the day - a clear overview of the whole process

The guide removes the guesswork entirely. You won't need to spend hours Googling "what to eat before a fitness photoshoot" or asking around in forums. It's all in there, written by someone who's guided thousands of clients through exactly this.

If anything in the guide raises a question, you can message Christopher and ask. There are no silly questions. He's heard them all, and he'd rather you arrived feeling confident than quietly stressed about something that could have been answered in two minutes.

The Week Before

The week before your shoot is about following the Prep Guide and keeping things simple:

  • Nutrition and hydration - the Prep Guide has a day-by-day approach. Nothing extreme, just sensible timing
  • Outfits - sort 3-5 options. Gym wear, casual, smart, lifestyle. Different outfits create different content
  • Grooming - haircut, tan, or any other grooming should be done 24-48 hours before the shoot
  • Posing - you don't need to practise. Christopher directs everything on the day. Practising in front of a mirror will just make you overthink it

That's it. Follow the guide, sort your outfits, and turn up. Christopher handles the rest.

Professional fitness photoshoot in action at Bailey studio

Arriving at the Studio

The studio is in Nottingham with free on-site parking. No meters, no time limits, no driving around looking for a space.

When you walk in, the first thing you'll notice is that it's a real gym. Not a sterile white photography studio. Not someone's garage with a backdrop pinned to the wall. It's a purpose-built gym studio with professional lighting, wall-to-wall mirrors, free weights, machines, benches, and a fully equipped training floor. It looks like a gym because it is a gym - one that's been designed from the ground up for fitness photography.

It's also completely private. There are no other clients booked at the same time. No gym members in the background. No audience. It's just you and Christopher. If you've brought a friend, partner, or coach for moral support, they're welcome too. But beyond that, the studio is yours.

The atmosphere is relaxed and professional. Christopher will show you around, point out the changing rooms and shower facilities, and have a chat about what you want from the session. No clipboard. No rigid brief. Just a conversation about the kind of images you're after and what you're planning to use them for.

This initial chat usually takes about five minutes. By the time it's over, most clients say the nerves have already started to fade.

The Session Itself

This is the part most people have the most questions about. Here's exactly how it works.

The First 10 Minutes

After the initial conversation, Christopher sets up the first lighting arrangement while you get changed into your first outfit. The changing rooms are private, with shower facilities if you need them.

The first few shots are about getting comfortable. Christopher will position you, adjust the lighting, and start shooting. These early frames aren't about perfection. They're about settling in, finding your rhythm, and getting used to the process. By the time you're five or six shots in, most clients say it already feels natural.

If you're stiff, Christopher will notice and adjust. If you're overthinking it, he'll talk you through it. He's done this thousands of times. He knows how to read a first-timer and he knows how to put you at ease quickly.

How Direction Works

This is the part that surprises most first-timers. You don't have to figure anything out yourself.

Christopher tells you exactly where to stand, how to position your body, where to look, what to do with your hands. He calls out micro-adjustments throughout the session: "turn your shoulder towards me", "chin down slightly", "relax your hands", "push your hips back". These small cues make an enormous difference on camera, and you don't need to know any of them in advance. That's entirely his job.

He's spent 18 years developing this. He's shot at 7 Mr Olympias and 7 Arnold Classics. His work has appeared in Muscle and Fitness, FLEX, Men's Health, and Men's Fitness. He's photographed thousands of people across every body type and fitness level. He knows what angles work, what lighting flatters your physique, and how to bring out the best in you. You just follow his lead.

Most clients say they stopped thinking about it within the first few minutes. It becomes a rhythm: Christopher directs, you move, the camera fires. It's collaborative, not performative. You're not "acting" or trying to look a certain way. You're responding to direction from someone who knows exactly what he's doing.

Outfit Changes

You can change outfits as many times as you like throughout the session. Most clients bring 3-5 options and use most of them. Different outfits create different content: gym wear for training shots, casual for lifestyle, smarter pieces for branding or headshots.

Christopher may suggest changing based on what's working on camera. He'll see opportunities you won't, and a quick outfit swap can completely shift the mood and style of the images.

The changing rooms are private and have shower facilities, so you can freshen up between sets if you need to.

The Pump

If your session is physique-focused, there will be a pump-up element. This means using the studio equipment (free weights, resistance bands, the rig) to get blood into the muscles before shooting. It makes a visible, significant difference on camera.

Christopher will tell you exactly what to do. A few sets of curls, some push-ups, band work. Nothing complicated, nothing exhausting. The studio has everything you need, so you don't need to bring your own equipment.

If you're not doing a physique-focused shoot, this won't apply. Christopher tailors the session to your goals.

How Long Does It Take?

Sessions run from 1.5 to 2 hours depending on your package. The studio is booked exclusively for your session, so there's no clock ticking in the background and no one waiting outside.

Most clients say it goes faster than they expected. By the time you've changed a few times, tried different setups, and found your groove, the session tends to fly by.

There's no rush at any point. If you need a break, take one. If you want to review some shots on the back of the camera, Christopher will show you. The session runs at your pace.

What to expect - the private gym photography studio

After the Shoot

The hard part is done. Here's what happens next.

Gallery Delivery

Your full gallery is delivered within 48 hours of the shoot. These are high-resolution files, ready for print and social media. You own the images for personal use.

When the gallery arrives, you'll be able to browse through every image from the session and select your favourites based on your package.

Choosing Your Edits

Depending on your package, you'll choose a set number of images from the gallery for full professional editing. Christopher's editing style is natural and professional. He enhances what's already there. He doesn't fabricate, distort, or create a version of you that doesn't exist. The final images will look like you on your best day, in your best light.

Your final edited images are delivered shortly after you make your selection.

What Clients Say Afterwards

The most common reaction from first-timers is some version of "I can't believe that's me." The second most common is "I wish I'd done this sooner."

Most clients say the photoshoot was the best thing they've done for their confidence. The images often exceed expectations, not because Christopher has performed magic with editing, but because most people have no idea how good they can look when they're properly lit, properly directed, and shot by someone who knows what they're doing.

Many clients book again within 12 months. What started as a one-off experience becomes something they return to as their physique develops or their goals change.

Common Concerns

These are the things people think but don't always say out loud. Every single one of them is completely normal.

"I'm not fit enough."

There's no minimum requirement. The studio photographs people at every stage of their fitness journey. You don't need a six-pack. You don't need to be stage-lean. If you've been putting the work in and you have something you're proud of, that's enough. This isn't an exclusive club. A large proportion of Christopher's clients aren't competition athletes. They're everyday people who've worked hard and want to capture the result.

"I'll look awkward in front of the camera."

Christopher directs every single shot. Where to stand, how to angle your body, what to do with your hands, where to look. You don't need to know any of this in advance. He's photographed thousands of first-timers and he knows exactly how to get you looking natural and confident within the first few minutes. You just follow his lead.

"It's expensive for someone like me."

The images last a lifetime. A gym selfie disappears into your camera roll. Professional images capture what you've built at a standard that does justice to the work you've put in. This is an investment in yourself, and it's one that clients consistently say was worth every penny. Sessions start from £425.

"What if I don't like the photos?"

Christopher shows you shots during the session, so you can see it working in real time. You'll also review your full gallery before choosing which images you want edited. In 18 years, the most common response has been "I can't believe that's me" - not disappointment.

"Can I bring someone with me?"

Absolutely. A friend, partner, or coach is welcome in the studio. Some first-timers find it helps to have a familiar face there for the first few minutes. Others prefer to come alone. Either way is completely fine. The studio is private, so it's just you, whoever you bring, and Christopher.
